We stop at a mystical Tree Aloe forests in an area that see the convergence of three botanical kingdoms the Nama-Karoo, the Succulent Karoo and the Cape Fynbos found on the higher ground and in the mountains. Each area has its own characteristic plant life and array of flowers.
After a fulfilling day viewing the flowers we stop at a nearby restaurant for the evening meal before traveling to our overnight accommodation on a guest farm set deep in this captivating landscape. We check into our peaceful accommodation for a quite nights rest. Overnight Guest farm, lunch, dinner, bed and breakfast
Day Four, Night Four
Guest farm via Springbok and the Namaqua National Park to Vanrhynsdorp
After a hearty farm breakfast we set out to explore the area and the fields of flowers we can expect to find in this rugged area. Today our aim is to view the flowers and diverse vegetation of two parks in and around the northern Namaqualand settlement of Springbok, where we stop for a deserved lunch break.
Leaving Springbok we descend onto the coastal plains to enjoy a wide diversity and variety of different plant life and landscapes before again returning to the main thoroughfare to head back south to overnight in the historic settlement of Vanrhynsdorp in the shadow of the Gifberg Mountain. Overnight Guesthouse, lunch, dinner, bed and breakfast
Day Five, Night Five
Vanrhynsdorp via Clanwilliam to Ladismith on R62
Early Coffee / Tea and Rusks before breakfast we head out to view the hundreds of tiny succulents that embed themselves into the surrounding gravel plains, the plains that gave rise to the name the “Knersvlakte” as a result of the bone jarring ride the pioneers experienced over these rough surfaces in their iron shod wagons. After a brief climb up the Gifberg Mountain, named by the early Bushman after a poisonous tree in the area, we make our way to the town of Clanwilliam to view the superb, annual wild flower show held in this colourful center.
We wonder through the spectacular displays of flowers where Picasso and Gauguin wouldstruggle to find the inspiration to emulate the abundance of colour, textures and the freewheeling spirits of the people of the Northern Cape and Namaqualand before leaving this centre behind. We continue into the Little Karoo and the picturesque town of Ladismith where we take our evening meal in a local restaurant and check into our accommodation for a restful night’s sleep. Overnight Guesthouse, lunch, dinner, bed and breakfast
Ladismith via the R62 to Oudtshoorn to Port Elizabeth
Wake early for breakfast to depart through spectacular scenery and countryside to meet the characterful Route 62, a detour through the Seweweekspoort if time allows and onto Calitzdorp the veritable home of South Africa Sherries and Ports before continuing to the Ostrich farming centre of Oudtshoorn as we wind our way along R62 to Port Elizabeth and the end of this delightful spring flower tour.
